The Importance of Family/Spousal Support in Hearing Loss Treatment
May 05, 2017
For individuals with hearing loss, the support of family and significant others is often a strong motivator to seek out a hearing examination and to pursue treatment for hearing loss.
Arnold Denied Having A Hearing Problem
Arnold*, an 86-year-old patient, recently came to our office for a consultation accompanied by his wife and son. Arnold denied having any true hearing difficulties, claiming that he hears “well enough for his age.”
Family Explained Impact On Them
Extensive time and counseling was provided to educate Arnold in regards to his hearing loss and the impact it can have on his quality of life. His son and wife were extremely supportive and encouraging during the appointment, explaining the impact of his hearing loss on the whole family. They explained that it makes them very sad to see him withdrawing in social situations and during family get-togethers.
Encouraged Him To Live Life To The Fullest
They further encouraged him to enjoy the life he has to its fullest and not to limit himself nor his quality of life due to his hearing loss. Both family members were committed to seeing him seek out help.
Hearing Aids Provided Tremendous Improvement
Following a lot of discussion, Arnold agreed to try wearing a pair of hearing aids in the office and noticed a tremendous improvement immediately. We placed an order for hearing aids that day and recently fit Arnold with his own personalized system.
Family Encouragement Was Key Motivator
Arnold has made it very clear that without his wife and son, he would never have sought out hearing related services.
Improved Quality Of Life For All
Quality of life has already improved for not only Arnold, but for his entire family! They are reporting more ease of communication and more meaningful conversations. Arnold is no longer withdrawing from social situations, and is participating fully with his family and friends.
Attend Hearing Consultation With Loved Ones
Loved ones are always encouraged to attend consultations with new patients to provide support as well as motivation. Family and friends can also provide an extra set of ears (which can be very helpful for those with impaired hearing), and think of questions the patient hadn’t thought to ask.
